Kids in the Kitchen: Chocolate Glazed Doughnuts Recipe (1)

We have yet another snow day today in New England. I swear, the kids have not been to school for like the past 5 Mondays. I am sort of losing my wits, so I decided a much needed baking sessions was in order today. Baking always helps me to unwind, and de-stress. With the arrival of my Holstein Housewares Fun Doughnut Maker I figured my oldest and I could get spend some time baking up a storm.

Since chocolate glazed doughnuts (or donuts) are my ultimate weakness, I decided to take a recipe I often use for “from scratch” chocolate cupcakes, and turn it into a chocolate doughnut recipe. These doughnuts would essentially be baked anyhow so I was confident it would work just fine, and it did!

The arrival of our Holstein Housewares Fun Doughnut Maker couldn’t have been timed any more perfectly. This family friendly, compact, small kitchen electric easily makes mini doughnuts in literally minutes. It is so easy to use, and is such a time saver. There are no extra pans to fuss with, stoves to pre-heat, or tricky cooking times. Our doughnuts took exactly 6 minutes per batch of 6 to make. I was able to make a whopping 24 in under a half hour!

My oldest daughter who is 7, helped me mix the batter, make the icing, and fill the piping bag with chocolate cake doughnut mix. We do not own one of those super cool Batter Bottles so I improvised and cut the tip off one of my icing bags-it was a kitchen hack that totally worked well!

Before using my Fun Doughnut Maker, I washed it, and then coated it lightly with some vegetable oil. I then plugged it in and waited for the light to turn green. This kitchen novelty does feature a non-stick surface, but the oil helps the doughnuts get those yummy crispy edges, and keep them awesome. We filled each little spot (makes 6 mini doughnuts) with batter, and then set the lid down, and waited 6 minutes.

After the 6 minutes, we had perfect little doughnuts that needed hardly any coaxing to get out of the pan, and onto our wire rack for cooling. It took about 25 minutes total and 4 sessions to make 24 doughnuts which is awesome! After they cooled, my daughter and I prepared the vanilla glaze for dipping.

It was really an easy peasy baking session that produced the tastiest little chocolate glazed cake doughnuts. I think the Fun Doughnut Maker did an excellent job, and it makes me want to try more of Holstein Housewares products.

Chocolate Glazed Doughnuts Recipe

This recipe makes 12 standard-sized doughnuts or 24 mini doughnuts

  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup of whole milk
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons of sour cream
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Doughnut Glaze recipe:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons of whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Directions:

Heat and prepare you Fun Doughnut Maker

In a large bowl, mix the dry doughnut ingredients; slowly add in the wet ingredients, and beat until well creamed.

Add mixture to a piping bag or batter bottle

Fill doughnut batter into the bottom doughnut wells, and cover; bake for 6 minutes or until springy; repeat

Once all doughnuts are cooled, it is time for the glaze! To prepare the glaze, simply combine all the ingredients in a large bowl, and then dip each doughnut into the glaze. Allow them to drip on a cooling rack onto a sheet pan to catch the glaze.

As you can see, these doughnuts came out terrific! They taste equally delicious, and my kids LOVED them! I cannot wait to make some additional batches with various sprinkles! These will be ideal for classmates, parties, and gifts because they bake up so quickly with VERY little mess, or effort!

How fun is that? My kids would probably kill to have a mini-donut maker. I love the idea of using a cake recipe. And I LOVE not having to fry them in grease.
