Our puffer jackets are available in two different kinds of insulation materials: down certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) or synthetic insulation.
At Columbia, there is no doubt that the down used in your puffer jacket is RDS-certified. We trace our supply chain and process from the source of raw materials to the finished coat. Ethical manufacturing practices and the welfare of animals are nothing we take lightly, and we make sure that the partners we work with share the same values.
Look out for the words or the logo “RDS-certified” on your down products to ensure that they’re manufactured responsibly.
Some examples of synthetic insulation we use are Thermarator™ 100% polyester or Omni-Heat™ Synthetic Down 100% Recycled Polyester. Apart from the padding, the shell and lining of our quilted long puffers are also often made of 100% polyester.
Columbia’s Omni-Heat™ insulation technology

Columbia’s Omni-Heat™ Reflective enhances heat retention, using small body heat-reflecting silver dots. The technology offers lightweight heat, which means you can wear fewer layers when you’re out in the cold. Perfect for brisk but active days out and about in the city. The high breathability of the clothing keeps you comfortable and lets moisture and excess warmth escape.
The Omni-Heat™ 3D technology means next-dimension warmth with a pattern of silver reflectors that increase coverage and retain heat. It also improves next-to-skin comfort, as it’s equipped with small pods of soft fibres. These pods create an air gap between the fabric and your skin.
Omni-Heat™ Black Dot has an external industry-first thermal shield and black dots which capture solar heat. The technology provides you with maximum outside-in thermal efficiency.
Omni-Heat™ Infinity provides instant warmth and has Columbia’s highest body-heat reflection technology. At the same, it doesn’t compromise on breathability.
