I saw this theory going around that said that when Mihawk agreed to train Zoro and thought “when a man of your calibre does something like that, it’s always for the sake of the another” he was talking about himself and shanks. That he wanted to be the best to join him and when he became greatest if was too late. Do you think it’s true? And the other one would zoro without luffy became mihawk? I don’t know how to feel about it since people also say the big part of mihawk is some betrayal that happened (someone on X/twt told me that)

interesting. i got a totally different read off that scene.

firstly because, as funny as it would be for mihawk to say to zoro ‘someone of your caliber’ and be referring to himself, i don’t think he’s quite that egotistical.

secondly because my understanding was the phrase ‘something like that’ referred to zoro shaming himself, setting aside his pride, to beg mihawk—the man he most wants to defeat—to train him. i.e., it’s not the ‘wanting to get stronger’ that must be happening for the sake of another, it’s the ‘shaming himself.’

so, is there a person mihawk knows, and esteems, who would debase himself for another’s sake?

…granted, the list of people we know mihawk thinks well of is short. (the list of people we know mihawk knows is short.) but… it’s shanks, right? that’s the only answer that makes sense to me.

would zoro become like mihawk if he didn’t have luffy in his life? i can see that happening, yeah. zoro when we first met him cared about people (see: rika, johnny and yosaku) but kept himself at a distance. he’d lost the person who mattered most—was he trying to keep from losing people again by not getting close to anyone? that certainly feels mihawk-like.

if luffy didn’t befriend him and bring him into the proximity of the rest of the strawhats, i can see him wandering the oceans aimlessly, challenging swordsmen to fights as he met them and only collecting bounties to pay his way. i think he’d pick up more friends of johnny and yosaku’s ilk, though; he can’t seem to resist helping people. so he wouldn’t be totally alone.

…i think a fight with mihawk early in his travels might break this version of zoro a little. the enormity of the distance between himself and the top might make zoro sink into despair, if he’s only fighting for his pride and kuina’s ghost.

but if he recovers from that—if he seeks out people stronger than him to learn from, rather than just to batter himself to pieces against their power—if he ends up at the top, alone—if he shouts up to the heavens that he did it, kuina, he did it!—the aftermath might be a bit empty. a bit dull.

& Zoro is never even showing physical attraction to any character either, he's never had any nosebleeds (that Japanese visual joke of feeling lust) ever, while Luffy has once lol

and Oda stated in a later SBS he felt Luffy showing physical attraction just once (eg nosebleeding at Nami in the bath scene at Alabasta just once in the entirety of One Piece so far & never again, not even to Nami ever again) still feels right to his character.

So I think Oda's words/handwave makes it more "canon" that Luffy is grey-aspec (ie he extremely rarely & fleetingly has physical attractions but always prioritizes everything else he wants besides that) than 100% ace.

Not to mention Luffy blushing at just the sight of a speck of Zoro from far far away after 2 weekS-

luffy blushing at the mere sight of zoro in the distance after two weeks apart truly is soooooo (especially considering it’s one of the few times we’ve seen luffy blush) luffy I know what u r (full of admiration and trust for ur first mate)

You didn't really answer my qustion though. What can you name that should be edited out? For example: which warlord do you cut out? Which arc they brought do you feel is unneeded and should be taken out? I promise I'm not being mean or snarky, it's just I've heard the 'too many randoms' all over, but nobody can actualy point to an actual character they find should be cut out so it kinda sound like 'just make it better'. And unless wiki is wrong, Tama is Koruzumi, not Kozumi - the fact you mixed it up kinda shows it didn't really matter, though I would argue it is important from narrative perspective of showing Koruzumi were not 'evil by blood' despite all names one being villains. Also: Zoro's lineage was also released trough SBS and I don't see people break up about it? Again, I'm just honestly curious about what you think.

my point is not invalidated because I misremembered a name, and Zoro’s lineage is another thing that either should have been in the manga or not been a thing at all. If Oda wasn’t going to do anything with it, he should have kept the connection between he and Wano be through Kuina. The Zoro lookalike characters during Yamato’s flashback only set up expectation in the audience that wasn’t followed through with. I understand that Zoro doesn’t give a f*ck, but if that’s the case then don’t make it a thing in the first place.

But to answer your question let’s look just at Wano. The Nine Scabbards should have been reduced down to a more reasonable number. I love them both dearly, but you could easily combine Dogstorm and Cat Viper into one character. Raizo doesn’t do much after Zou, so replace him there with someone else—I’d say Izo, since that’s the character who could have used some time with the main cast to make their ridiculous death more impactful. You could say after Marineford they were trying to get back to Wano and stumbled upon Momo and the rest while traveling. Shinobu can handle being the main ninja character, and no Raizo means you don’t have to have earlobe guy so now there’s no meaningless 25 chapter fight.

With Izo reintroduced thusly, there’s no reason for Marco to show up at all. In fact, he has a built-in reason for not showing up by protecting Whitebeard’s homeland. This will require some rewriting of the arc, but imo he ended up taking away too much valuable hype from more important characters to really justify his presence, so get him out of there.

It was clear Oda was having a hard time finding a purpose for Drake, and Hawkins, and Apoo. Of those three, you could easily get rid of Apoo and not lose anything. Have a quick flashback of him dying epically in the Kidd Pirate Alliance battle against Kaido. It would have been a better showing than he gave in the arc itself.

And that’s just off the top of my head. I haven’t done any rereading of Wano since that chapters were released. If someone went over the arc more carefully there would be more (like, does Carrot really need to be there? Do any of the other Zou characters?) I really think you could get the Scabbards down to 5 characters if you tried, but I’d have to figure out how that would fit with the rest of the story.

My problem with One Piece isn’t the number of arcs, it’s that the arcs themselves are too long. Enies Lobby was epic in scale and had a lot of different factions to account for, but it didn’t take three years to get through. Theres going to be some ballooning in size as the crew has gotten bigger, but even that could be worked around. Have more tag team fights like on Thriller Bark, for example, so the enemy crews don’t have to have so many people. Reduce the roll of side characters and give their feats to the Straw Hats who haven’t gotten enough love after the time skip. There’s lots of things Oda could have done, but he hasn’t.

I honestly also think fan portrayals of Luffy (both by people shipping him to other characters or not shipping him to anyone) being so ""childish"" (when he had accepted before Vivi that they cannot save every people in war, & have other displays of maturity I'll mention below... he's just enjoying "stereotylically boyish" things/actively trolling cuz he's so confident in his & his crew's abilities/being indulgent behaviorally most of the time but he is very aware of loss, battle deception, etc.)

that they think he does not know anything about sex or romantic love... is majorly not canon!

Cuz (disclaimer a bit raunchy here) Luffy not only canonically consciously made a balls pun all on his own (the family jewels/kintama ie golden balls thing) in Amazon Lily & *explained* to them that those balls + "mushroom thing" can help make babies (so he knows what procreation is but isn't interested in that at this point in time & all of the main canon One Piece media so far... canon doesn't say he 100% will never want that)

At the start of Whole Cake Luffy also says sth like he knows marrying should only be done out of love & only wants to stop Sanji's marriage if he sees Sanji is not happy with it. Luffy even says he'll invite Sanji's spouse to be part of his crew if they want to! As in Luffy understands what marrying & spouses are, & doesn't oppose having a couple in a happy/healthy romantic/married relationship on his crew & boat at all within canon!

So Oda's words of not having romance on the boat is not absolute- it's just Oda setting the boundary that he wouldn't show romance happening on the boat in the main storyline because his storytelling for the Strawhats specifically would not focus on that, but none of his Strawhat characters have actively opposed to it. Oda even said he knows his characters can be interpretted however his readers want & has long accepted he has no control over that.

Luffy doesn't even call the Strawhats his adoptive family ever in canon! He calls them his friends! He differentiates between them, his friends, from Ace & Sabo who he calls his blood brothers! He never calls Zoro his brother, Nami his sister, etc. (if she is why did Oda not deny he ogled her under Usopp's influence??? Oda said in an SBS it's icky to do that towards siblings, so he'd never make Sanji do that ogling gag to his sister!) Even if Oda says the older guys are like the crew's dads, doesn't mean Luffy himself considers them his actual adoptive dads, for another example less related to this main argument.

So that original poster on Tumblr who recently puts in their z0s4n/one piece/opla post tag that Zolu shippers are in the same category of moral wrongness as incest shippers like Th0rk1 fans can kick rocks,

because the canon they think they're """following properly""" contradicts their own hcs (which they should realize are just personal hcs & not canon representation at all)

literally! just because luffy isnt interested in something doesnt mean he doesnt know what it is or that hes this innocent childlike character bc hes not lol

Oda-approved questions to help build your OC

If you head to the One Piece Wiki page of the Straw Hats and take a look at the Miscellaneous section, you'll find a lot of trivia questions about the Straw Hats that Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has answered in the Q&A portion attached to some manga chapters, called an SBS. I like to call those answers "Straw Hat Fun Facts" and I love them, because they work really well if you want to flesh out your OC and give them a bit more life and depth.

So, even if you're not planning on making your OC a Straw Hat, these questions might still be helpful for you to think about.

The way I'm gonna structure this post for the sake of avoiding spoilers is I'm gonna list all current LA Straw Hats with their facts and all future confirmed Straw Hats will have their facts mentioned without their name, if it makes sense to mention them. That way you can avoid duplicates within the crew if you want to do that and still have no clue about who's gonna join. I'm also gonna comment on how the various fun facts apply to the live action adaptation wherever applicable.

If you're looking for people's birthdays, I'm gonna make another post about them, don't you worry. But you won't find them here.

Animal Resemblances

Luffy: Monkey

Zoro: Shark/Tiger

Nami: Cat

Usopp: Armadillo/Chameleon

Sanji: Duck/Bighorn Sheep

Others: Reindeer, Red Panda, Crane, Falcon, Bull, Rhinoceros, Horse, Giraffe, Whale Shark, Bear

I don't think any of them were mentioned or referenced just yet in the live action, aside from Luffy's name having the word Monkey in it, but that doesn't count. I'm pretty sure we'll get some hints in the future though since these just have such great potential for easter eggs.

Specific Numbers

Now, this is a category that's a bit more complicated because each Straw Hat has at least two signature numbers, for very different reasons. Everyone has a main number based on when they joined, with Luffy being number 1. The second number is the same but it skips Luffy, making Zoro number 1, but this version is rarely used, if ever at all. Then there's the possibility of a Straw Hat getting a number assigned to them based on a pun, whether that be based on their name, their devil fruit, or something entirely different. I'll explain pun numbers in a bracket.

Luffy: 01, 56 (go-mu)

Zoro: 02/01

Nami: 03/02, 73 (na-mi)

Usopp: 04/03

Sani: 05/04, 32 (san-ji), 59 (ko-kku = cook)

Others: 06/05 - 10/09, 110, 87, 26, 43

Now, you may ask: "Evie, I wanna have a pun number for my OC, how do they work?" I got you, buddy. You can make your own pun numbers using a technique called goroawase, using this handy chart I made based on a Wikipedia chart. Everything I added is in (brackets) and consists of variants that would technically be possible due to my own understanding of goroawase, but might not be commonly used.

On a very basic level, all you have to do to create your pun number is to grab the readings from this table and glue them together. I took some work off your shoulders by adding the phonetic changes you can use, indicated by the arrows. You can also only use the first syllable of a reading or add or remove an n at the end of readings that end in vowels or n's. As you can see whith Sanji's ko-kku, you can duplicate consonants, and you can also turn short vowels into long vowels (tsu -> tsū, for example), both for spelling reasons. If you need to transcribe a c, either use an s or a k (or whatever else fits), depending on the pronunciation.

Here are some examples with my OCs:

Cora: 96 (ko-ra) or 25510 (a-ka-i-to - would be very unusual due to its number of digits, but I think I'll use this as a plot device in a future fic!)

Luna: 67 (lu-na/ru-na)

Inari: 576 (i-na-ri) or 53 (ka-mi)

Specific Colors

This was in the live action! And I think we'll definitely see something similar again later.

You can't really see it that well but here are Luffy, Nami and Zoro lit up in their respective colors - red, orange and green respectively! I tried to take a better screenshot but, alas, Netflix will not let me.

Luffy: red (aka)

Zoro: green (midori)

Nami: orange (orenjī)

Usopp: yellow (kiiro)

Sanji: blue (ao)

Others: pink (pinku), purple (murasaki), light blue (mizuiro), white (shiro), black (kuro), ochre (ōdoiro)

As you can see, we pretty much have the whole rainbow here, which makes picking a unique color for your OC pretty hard, BUT it's completely allowed to use different shades of the same color (see: blue vs light blue), which is why I listed the Japanese color names for you. I did some digging and it turns out that these are the names of some of Japan's traditional colors. Those traditional colors don’t always match up with what my impression of the character's color is, BUT I made this handy little graphic for you:

In case there are any animal-related characters around and for those of you who like describing smells in their fanfic (me too, me too), this might be very useful!

These are all of the Straw Hats' specific colors (top row) according to the overview of Japanese traditional colors I linked for you above, their color names underlined with my perception of what color Oda might actually have been referring to, in modern terms. As for the grey names beneath orange and pink, those are the traditional colors from the overview that I used to replace the romanized English colors, based on what the first translation that popped up was. The columns directly underneath are a selection of different shades of the same color, also with their names. It just goes to show that you have a huge variety of colors to choose from for your OC - Japan's traditional colors alone are about 1,000 different colors and you can definitely play with hex codes some more. So, go wild!

Specific Smells

Luffy: meat

Zoro: steel (and probably blood, let’s be honest)

Nami: mikan (tangerines, essentially) and money

Usopp: gunpowder

I'd say everyone smells of the sea at least a little bit, realistically speaking, since they are pirates.

Sanji: cigarettes and seafood (and I'm willing to bet he wears some type of cologne or aftershave or something)

Favourite Type of Island and Season

Luffy: summer but he also loves snow, basically everywhere with meat

Zoro: autumn on an autumn island

Nami: summer on a spring island

Usopp: summer on an autumn island

Favourite Food

Sanji: a spoilery gag, so get creative!

We either directly see some of these in the live action or can easily guess.

Luffy: any kind of meat

Zoro: white rice (specifically in the shape of onigiri aka rice balls), sea beast meat, any food that compliments sake (though he's also pretty fond of beer, at least in the live action)

Nami: mikans (tangerines) and most other fruits

Usopp: pike from an autumn island and other fish of the season

Sanji: spicy sea food pasta, food that compliments black tea

Others: not really relevant but maybe interesting; cotton candy, chocolate, sweet stuff in general, sandwiches, not-too-sweet cakes, food that compliments coffee, basically anything that you can find at McDonald's, curry, mozoku seaweed with vinegar and fruits

Basically, Sanji gets to juggle around a whole lot of different flavours and cultural influences - and he does it really well and finds a way to make everything special, by the way! He generally favors the ladies in his cooking though.

Least Favourite Food

Even Sanji can't make them like everything. Their reasons for not liking something are very different, so they probably still eat it, especially if it's used in something Sanji prepared because he's their cook

Luffy: Cherry pie

Zoro: Chocolate (yes, chocolate! Adds a lot more depth to the scene of him eating Rika's rice balls, doesn't it?) - it's too sweet

Nami: orangette (candied orange peels) - she prefers actual fruit

Usopp: mushrooms - he got sick once

Sanji: konjac (Japanese konjac gel is usually made by mixing flour from the konjac plant with seaweed; it pretty much tastes like nothing and is used mainly for its texture) - it's not nutritious

Others: anything spicy, chewing gum, marshmallows, lemons, parfait

As a Family

This is part of the reason why Oda said there would be no romances within the crew in canon - but this is fandom, he has no power here. Feel free to ignore any of these roles and substitute canon with your own

Luffy: fourth son

Zoro: first son

Nami: daughter

Usopp: third son

Sanji: second son

Others: another child, parents and grandparents

Real-world Nationalities

Now, this is interesting, because these played a part in how the Straw Hats were cast for the live action!

Luffy: Brazilian (Mexican in the live action)

Zoro: Japanese

Nami: Swedish (her actress is American, but she was kept as white)

Usopp: unspecified African (his actor is Jamaican-American, so it sort of checks out)

Sanji: French (Sanji's actor is very international, but he's not French - I do believe Sanji is still supposed to be at least part French in the live action though, at least he still has an affinity for the language and he may very well have grown up multilingual)

Others: Canadian, Russian, American, Austrian, Indian

Inner Brain

Basically: What are the five words their brain/subconscious circles around?

Luffy: meat, meat, meat, meat, pirate king

Zoro: sword, sword, strength, train, sleep

These were actually answered by one of the voice actresses for the anime (except for Luffy and Zoro's alternates) but they're Oda-approved! I know fanfic writers love flower language, so rejoice!

Typical Hours of Sleep

The only reference to this we have in the live action is Zoro's habit of napping. An interesting thing to note is that the Straw Hats' sleep schedules largely coincide in just such a way that someone is always awake - except for during one hour. Maybe this really is a coincidence or maybe this is a habit they built while travelling together. They do still have night watches though, I believe. But that means there's usually always someone to keep the night watch company :)

Luffy: no set time, but usually sleeps around 5 hours

Zoro: 4am to 7am (3 hours) + naps

Nami: 11pm to 7am (8 hours)

Usopp: 1am to 8am (7 hours)

Sanji: 12am to 5am (5 hours)

In conclusion, more than half of the crew has no idea what a healthy sleep schedule is. This is a pattern that's gonna continue, by the way...

Suitable Careers

Basically what careers they would have if they weren't pirates. Their actual careers in-universe also don't count.

Luffy: firefighter

Zoro: police officer (I will not accept this slander)

Nami: childcare worker

Usopp: graphic designer

Sanji: beauty salon worker

Others: elementary school teacher, cabin attendant, pilot, detective, train station attendant

Cooking Specialities

What are they best at cooking? According to Usopp in the live action, none of the guys besides Sanji can even boil water, so I'm willing to assume Sanji may have taught them a little. A lot. Not Luffy though. He's still a disaster.

Luffy: raw meat on a plate

Zoro: sashimi - a dish consisting of variously cut raw fish and meat

Nami: roasted duck with mikan sauce

Usopp: fish and chips

Sanji: literally anything, but he prefers seafood

Who would win a 50m sprint?

Another very useful one for fanfics! Tolerance doesn't equal how much they like drinking, by the way. I'd be willing to bet that the Straw Hats' alcohol tolerances got toned down in the live action, or at least Zoro's, judging by him stating how he woke up under a table once. With his manga-level tolerance, he would have had to drink gallons worth of alcoholic beverages before that happened. Still, I think the ranking holds up.

Fifth: Luffy

First: Zoro

And finally one last bit that doesn't really fit anywhere else:

Sanji is currently the most qualified to give the crew a haircut. This makes sense if you read about his alternative career choice earlier and due to him generally putting a lot of thought into appearances.

One thing I love about ZoTash, is that the creators of the official One Piece manga and video games never stray from Oda's writing to write Zotash.

Here we see a Zoro who realizes that there is in fact a sword expert who is not him.

I find it funny since in one SBS Oda was asked what Zoro was thinking about, i.e. what was in his thoughts and it was just:

Sword, sword, sword, sword, sword and strength.

Kinda related to a prev post of yours but the day I see one piece stop trying to infuse both nuclear family roles and hierarchy (mostly around Zoro, oddly enough. Like, let zosan be equals and stop trying to make there be a first mate strawhat when the narrative pretty much categorically rejects that other than For The Bit) is the day I finally know peace. Like,,, no one is mommy or daddy and aside from the Captain all of them are highly specialized in their field with no more authority than anyone else so just??? Stop??? (Sorry for the mini rant - I hope you have a lovely week!!)

I assume you mean the one piece audience and not one piece in general dgdkg Oda's only made that single "this is the roles I guess they'd have" SBS and then never did anything with that LMAO.

No but fr, the amount I've seen "it feels weird shipping any strawhats they're a found family" like 😭😭 what are you TALKING about people can literally find romantic love in found family, because we are NOT talking about a nuclear family you FOOLS!!!

Whenever Nami is labelled the big sister I literally die inside because not ONLY does she have her OWN family with Nojiko outside of the strawhats where she's LITERALLY the little sister, SHE IS JUST AS INSANE AS THE REST OF THEM LMAO. Like it's exactly as you said, everyone looks after each other in the Strawhats, there's no weird mummy and daddy parental family dynamic here. People slap the 'big brother' role on Zoro when he looks after Chopper, but then you have Chopper literally carrying Zoro around and fixing him up mid battle like HGJKFD these roles are not literal and found family is so profound and beautiful that shoving everyone into a nuclear family box is just an injustice to me :(((

Thoughts on sbs108?

…i assume you mean the mihawk question, anon? tl;dr, i feel like that answer was pretty obvious from the text?

like, look at mihawk at marineford. he comes across as very reluctant to work with the marines (this is his first time responding to a navy summons in a while, iirc), but he's accepted that this is the price he has to pay for his peaceful life. that peace and quiet is all he's upset about losing when the warlord system is dissolved.

the epithet of "marine hunter," which crocodile brought up in his join my new company call, was the first piece of new information about mihawk we'd gotten in a long time, and i did find it interesting… both in contrast with zoro's "pirate hunter" epithet, which uses the same word (狩り, gari) for 'hunter,' and on its own merits. you have to imagine the marines were pretty desperate, to offer a warlordship to someone infamous for killing their men—and mihawk must have been tired of doing all that killing, or at least tired of the infamy that came with it, to accept.

and the "hiding in buggy's shadow" thing is literally text. like, that's why mihawk tells crocodile they shouldn't just kill buggy outright in chapter 1058.

His current ship's name is "Thousand Sunny", which alluded to the Sun God Nika.

The flower representing Luffy is the Sun Flower (revealed in SBS).===

InLoguetown, Sanji asked Zoro if he believed in God, when lightning freed Luffy fromexecution lunette. (Funny commentary looking back.)

The Loguetown incident is also thereasonBartolomeo started idolizing Straw hats and thebeginningof Luffy-senpai cult. (Should it be Luffy-senpai religion, since Luffy is kind of a God now?)

Nami and his crews can hit Luffy without haki. That is either because Luffy unconsciously allow them to or the Nika fruit just like gags. lol===

InSkypiea, Zoro stated that he does not believe in God. (Well, Zoro, we've got news for you.)

Shandiaworships the Sun God (which is probably Nika). So Enel vs Luffy is Fake God vs Real God. They were kinda saved by their own God.

Many people used to said that one piece themes in each arc is repetitive and often about Luffy and co liberated countries and/or people, well, apparently that was actually deliberated.===

Does Shank know? Shank was in East Blue for a year after stealing the fruit, what was he doing there? Was he trying to find Ace in Dawn? (since in One Piece: Stampede, Roger said next person to find One Piece would be his son.) Why did he not kept the fruit lock up? Did Nika fruit choose Luffy?

Nika is similar toRomanized Japanese word that roughly translates to "toothy grin" or laugh sound.
